On Saturday the Wells Swim Team drove a short distance over to Gevena to swim against William Smith and Cazenovia College. Last year, the women's Cazenovia team won NEAC Championships but they were not victorious at this meet. Wells went into this meet with a disadvantage, not having any divers to aid in points but we prevailed!
Both teams started out the meet with a good foot by winning the first event, 200 medley relay. The women continued to win 6 other events. Britta Kilbourn (FR) won all 3 of her events, including the 200 medley relay, 1000 FR and 500 FR. Kilbourn had a PB in the 1000 by almost 30 seconds. Gabby Spencer (FR) also won all 3 of her events including the 200 medley relay, 200 IM and 100 FR. Spencer also earned the title of being the 4th fastest swimmer ever at Wells in the 200 IM with a time of 2:29.68. She is now only 4 seconds away from taking down ANOTHER 20 YEAR OLD RECORD!
On the men's side, Chris Guard (JR) won 2 events including the 100 FLY and 500 FR. Mike Scharvella (SR) and Hunter Harris (SR) earned 1st and 2nd place respectively in the 100 BA. Matt Sleezer (FR) won the 50 FR by a close .3 seconds!
TENSE MOMENT OF THE MEET
3 meter diving was complete and both our teams NEEDED to win the 100 BR in order to win the meet. I spoke to all 4 swimmers, putting the pressure on their shoulders. The women's team was up first and Erika Bareiss (SO) was up for the challenge. She not only won the event but earned a PB. Bareiss was also a part of the wining 200 medley relay.
Now, it was time for the men's team to do their part. Drew Teter (JR) is mostly a fly/IMER but today he was swimming the 100 BR. He earned a PB, 4th place on the top ten times and won the event! Teter was also part of the winning 200 Medley relay team as well as winning the 200 IM.
