Wells WINS

On Saturday the Wells Swim Team drove a short distance over to Gevena to swim against William Smith and Cazenovia College. Last year, the women's Cazenovia team won NEAC Championships but they were not victorious at this meet. Wells went into this meet with a disadvantage, not having any divers to aid in points but we prevailed!

Both teams started out the meet with a good foot by winning the first event, 200 medley relay. The women continued to win 6 other events. Britta Kilbourn (FR) won all 3 of her events, including the 200 medley relay, 1000 FR and 500 FR. Kilbourn had a PB in the 1000 by almost 30 seconds. Gabby Spencer (FR) also won all 3 of her events including the 200 medley relay, 200 IM and 100 FR. Spencer also earned the title of being the 4th fastest swimmer ever at Wells in the 200 IM with a time of 2:29.68. She is now only 4 seconds away from taking down ANOTHER 20 YEAR OLD RECORD!

On the men's side, Chris Guard (JR) won 2 events including the 100 FLY and 500 FR. Mike Scharvella (SR) and Hunter Harris (SR) earned 1st and 2nd place respectively in the 100 BA. Matt Sleezer (FR) won the 50 FR by a close .3 seconds!

TENSE MOMENT OF THE MEET

3 meter diving was complete and both our teams NEEDED to win the 100 BR in order to win the meet. I spoke to all 4 swimmers, putting the pressure on their shoulders. The women's team was up first and Erika Bareiss (SO) was up for the challenge. She not only won the event but earned a PB. Bareiss was also a part of the wining 200 medley relay.

Now, it was time for the men's team to do their part. Drew Teter (JR) is mostly a fly/IMER but today he was swimming the 100 BR. He earned a PB, 4th place on the top ten times and won the event! Teter was also part of the winning 200 Medley relay team as well as winning the 200 IM.

Senior Meet

All the swimmers have been back in the pool since January 3rd. They have been working hard with doubles and dryland. Yesterday, January 14th was our first meet of the new year. It was also our Senior Meet.

Hunter Harris joined this team in the beginning of this season. Hunter is an Economics major and plans to go on to graduate school. He has made a great impression on this team as well as putting his name up on the All Wells Top Ten Times. He is 8th in the 50 FR, 5th in the 100 BA and 10th in the 100 BR. At today's meet he took off 2 seconds in his 100 BA.

Mike Scharvella has been on this team since his freshmen year. Mike is majoring in Math Education and plans to go to graduate school and become a Math teacher. He has been our backstroker ever since his first meet. He holds the 500 FR, 100/200 BA records and is part of the 400/800 FR relays and 200/400 Medley Relays. He is also on the top ten list in 5 other individual events.

Congratulations to both our Seniors and GOOD LUCK!!!

The Aurora Polar Bear Plunge

Every year on the first of the year everyone from the town of Aurora and neighboring towns go to the church on the lake in Aurora, NY. Today, at 11am sharp about 50 people joined Carolyn (class of '74, Aurora homeowner and assistant swim coach) and Kelsey (class of 2010, from Colorado and previous swim team captain) to take the plunge into the chilly Cayuga Lake. T.J. a Wells alums has been sponsoring this event for almost 20 years.

Below are some of the pictures..
