Coach's Swim Meet
Left to Right: Kait Mullen (SO), Hallie Hanson (SO) and Gwenn Lillie (SR) |
In November I gave the team a fun challenge. I was planning on swimming at a U.S. Swimming Master's Meet and when I was thinking about what events to pick, I thought of an idea.....every meet the swim team wins they can pick one of my events! Well, they swam very well and won many times.
They picked the 50 FR, 500 FR, 100 Fly, 200 IM - A few of the women's team came to my meet to cheer me and Wells College Athletic Trainer, Janet.

Hour of Power Relays
Carleton College swimmer, Ted Mullin died of a rare soft tissue disease called Sarcoma Cancer in 2006. His team-mates wanted to honor him and designed an event called, "Hour of Power Relays". Basically the swim team swims an hour in relay fashion. The goal is to swim each 50 in an all out sprint and also to make sure the lanes stay together.
This is our 5th year in a row that the Wells Swim Team has participated in this event. Every year we include the student body as well as faculty and staff. This year there were about 10 students, an athletic trainer, swim coach and the entire Wells Swim Team that participated in this event.
It is a tough event but it is a great way to not only bring the team together and get a great workout but it is for a better cause! We raised awareness and funds to go towards Cancer Research.

NEAC Athletes of the Week
Feudale, a freshman, made appearances in four events for the Express on Saturday, finishing first in all but one event while contributing to a total of 21 points in the team's victory. Feudale set a personal record in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:08.35 to rank her fourth all-time in program history in that event.
She also claimed first place in the Women's 50 Yard Freestyle (0:28.57) and second in the Women's 200 Yard Backstroke (2:34.00), trailing the event leader by just greater than one second in the latter event. In relay competition, Feudale helped her team take first place in the Women's 200 Yard Medley Relay with an overall time of 2:05.42.
The selection of Feudale by the NEAC is her second career conference award nod, having also received the award earlier this season on Oct. 22.
Sleezer, a junior, set the program record in the Men's 1000 Yard Freestyle and placed first in all three of his individual events during the Express' dual against Utica on Saturday. In the aforementioned freestyle event, Sleezer posted a field-best time of 11:36.93, which ranks first all-time in program history and shatters the previous team record by 19 seconds.
In the Men's 100 Yard Freestyle, Sleezer also captured first place with a time of 0:51.96. In his only relay appearance in the Men's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Sleezer also posted his team's fastest time (0:22.37) while swimming the final leg. Sleezer, who also set the Express record in the Men's 50 Yard Freestyle last Saturday, now has the top-two marks in that event after finishing with a first-place finish time of 0:22.50 against Utica.
With the award, Sleezer has now received Student-Athlete of the Week honors five different times dating back to his sophomore season.

Wells Women Win!
The Wells swim teams went against Utica College this past Saturday. Both teams had amazing races and even better times!
The women's team gets the honors of winning this dual meet. This is first time the women's team has won over Utica within my career here at Wells. The last time Wells beat Utica was in 1996! Below are the reasons why the women's team did so well.
Women's Team Highlights
- First event of the day was the 200 Medley relay (2:05.42), where Feudale (FR), Terry (FR), Spencer (JR), Touron (SO) beat the competition by almost a full 4 seconds. This race also put the ladies 5th of the Top Ten List, just shy of a full second off of the record.
- Olive Touron (SO) is a great racer. If anyone is near by she will fight till the very end and that is exactly what she did in the 200 FR. She fought hard and earned 1st place (2:14.52).
- Hilary Feudale (FR) and Gabby Spencer (JR) were ahead of the competition by over 5 seconds in the 100 BA and both recieved season bests earning 1st and 2nd place respectively.
- Many of the swimmers swam a new event including Hallie Hanson (SO) and Gwenn Lillie (SR) in the 200 Fly; Meghan Terry (FR) and Melanie Canales (FR) in the 200 BR. Terry earned 3rd place at the meet and 7th place on the Top Ten List; Feudale in the 200 BA.
- Spencer (JR) and Terry (FR) also took 1st and 2nd place respectively in the 200 IM.
Men's Team Highlights
- Matt Sleezer (JR) won all 3 individual events including breaking the 1000 record by over 20 seconds, 11:36.93. He also took first in the 50 FR (22.50) and 100 FR (51.96).
- Patrick Munroe (FR) and Tom Laier (JR) earned 1st and 2nd place respectively in the 500 FR. Munroe also swam the 200 Fly for the first time and missed the record by only a second with a time of 2:22.20.

Birthday Cap
We have a birthday tradition on the swim team. If you have a birthday in season you have to swim 25 yards in between your team-mates who are making large waves with kickboards at you from both sides. Then when you are finished you jump into a cap.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GABBY!
Gabby is a Junior on the team from Trumansburg, NY. She holds the 50 FR and 200 IM record.
2012-2013 Swm Season has begun!!
September 10th was the first day of practice and the team came in ready to go! Many of the swimmers got a head start in their training by practicing as soon as they got on campus.
There are many cold days ahead of us so we took advantage of this warm weather and did our dryland training right along the beautiful Cayuga Lake. The team did a circuit that including tuck jumps, planks, dips, lunges...etc. Below is a picture of the team posing after the workout on the Boathouse pier.
Important Date:
Saturday, September 29th - First Home Meet of the season
