Hour of Power Relay
On Thursday, November 11th the Wells Swim Team joined over 130 college, HS and club swim teams in this powerful event. It is called the Hour of Power Relay. A Carleton College swimmer past away from Sarcoma Cancer. This is cancer is a rare soft tissue disease that affect people in their early 20's. His team-mates did not want to ever forget his memory so they have created this event.
It is an hour of relays. Everyone must sprint each time they enter the water but at the same time making sure that each lane is on the same lap. Carleton's swim team's quote is "Leave it in the Pool". And that is what the Wells swim team did! We raised over $100 and we were even able to get some non-swim team students to participate even me!
The swim team was excited to be a part of such a great event and to raise money and awareness to this great cause.

On the women's side, a 20 year old record was almost broke by Gabby Spencer (FR). She was only off .02. This was a best time for Spencer and I am positive she will break this record! Spencer also came in 1st place in the 50 FR, 100 Fly and she was part of the 200 FR relay team with Idolyn Villiotti (JR), Britta Kilbourn (FR) and Gwenn Lillie (SO).

Wells College Record Broken!
We had a fantastic meet on Friday, October 29th against SUNY IT. The women had a dominating performances by wining all events and ended with a score of 102 to 13.
The men's team also had a great meet. We did not have our full roster of 8 men and only showed up with 6 against 9 SUNY IT swimmers. Throughout the whole meet Wells was up in points but we didn't have enough swimmers to complete the meet with a relay and IT won the meet. With that said we had some excellent races.
Matt Sleezer (FR) from Gloversville, NY broke the 50 FR record by .6 seconds and brought the time down to 23.25. Below is the video of the race.
Taylor Dunn (FR) had an excellent meet earning his place on the All Wells Top Ten Time List. He is now on there for 3 events, 200 FR (3rd), 100 FLY (4th) and 200 Medley Relay (4th). Drew Teter (JR) and Dan Schilling (SO) held there spots on the top ten list but with faster times.

Swim Season Has Begin
Yesterday was the first day of practice for the 2010-2011 season!
This year we have 11 women and 10 men with 5 new female and 6 new male swimmers. Last year we finished the season with a 1st place win by the men and a 2nd place win by the women at our conference championships. The team is stronger, faster and smarter and I believe we will be as successful if not better than last year!
The team already did a team event before season began with our annual Car Wash to raise money for our Florida 2012 trip and to buy technical suit for our championship meets. Below are a few pictures.

Honors Convocation
It is a tradition at Wells to have 3 convocations - Opening Convocation celebrates the beginning of the academic year and is the seniors’ first chance to wear their academic gowns. The Collegiate Cabinet plans the Convocation that opens the spring semester and welcomes students, faculty and staff back to campus after the intersession. And finally last night's Honors Convocation is where most annual academic award presentations for student’s achievements are made.
This year we had two Senior swimmer's earn recognition.
Tiffany has been an outstanding student and has earned the Kathryn S. Maloney Scholar Athlete Award for having the highest cumulative GPA over the past 3 years that she has been on the swim team over all the other student-athletes. Tiffany was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society which is an honor typically conferred upon fewer than 10% of each graduating class. Students do not apply, they must be selected by the Phi Beta Kappa chapter as a whole.
Kelsey was nominated by the Dean of Students and was selected into Who's Who Among Students in American College and Universities which is a nationally recognized organization.

2010-2011 Captains
The Team has voted for next season's captains:
Women's Captain goes to Idolyn and Gwenn!
Idolyn is a Junior and is on the All Wells Top Ten Times in 3 events (100/200 BA & 400IM). She was shocked about being selected but is excited to start! Her first mission is to get the team together for some waterpolo games and maybe even a few laps this semester.
Gwenn is a Freshman who swam the middle distance freestyle events (100/200/500 FR). She is also excited and is going to try to incorporate some of her H.S. cheers into next season.
Men's Captain goes to Jeff!
Jeff is a Junior who holds 3 individual records and is part of all 5 relay records. It wasn't a question in anyone's mind that Jeff would be captains for his Senior year! He is very dedicated to this sport and does everything he can to raise everyone up to their potential.
Congratulations to all the selected Captains!

Alternative Spring Break
"Students are interested in using their time and talents for more than just partying on the beach, says Tiffany. "Many of us find service work to be a more engaging and rewarding alternative." Including Tiffany there were 10 total volunteers to join forces with Habitat for Humanity including our senior captain, Kelsey. Tiffany, President of the College Community Service and Activism Board stated, “They still need a lot of help (in New Orleans). They’ve lost some of their limelight, because of all the other natural disasters going on".
At Wells, participating students had to chip in $250 each for their airfare and raised some $1,000 selling cookies to cover their food and lodging costs. The college donated $3,000 to rent a van and defray other trip costs, said Becca Cooper, Wells’ Events and Programming Coordinator and one of the chaperons.
“I’ve always been big in volunteering. It’s just something I find very rewarding,” Tiffany said.
