5 Records Shattered!

We have officially completed the 1st semester of swimmer. We ended with a win for the men's team and a lost for the women's team against King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The men's team shattered 5 Records! Starting off the meet with the 400 Medley Relay (Mike, Jeff, Drew & Dan) shaving off 13 seconds.

Jeff (JR) and Drew (SO) both broke the 200 IM record. Drew besting his PB by 2 seconds and Jeff shattering the record by 5 seconds.

It was the first time that Dan (FR) and Chris (SO) has ever swam the 200 Fly. Dan broke the record by 8 seconds and Chris and Anthony (SO) placed 2nd and 3rd on the Top Ten Times at Wells respectively.

You hear this name a lot, Jeff a JR from Albion, NY bettered his 200 BR time by 11 seconds holding the record.

Mike (JR) has only swam the 200 BA a handful of times but every time he swims he takes more time off his time. He was able to shave off another 3 seconds off keeping his Wells record.

Jackie (JR) earned the first place spot in 2 out of 3 of her events (50 FR & 200 FLY).

Gwenn (1650), Sarah (200 BA), Erika (200 BR) and Kelsey (200 BR) all swam a new event at King's.

Meg (FR) took off 10 seconds off of her 500 FR to earn a PB.

Outside HEAT

Saturday's meet was against the College of St. Elizabeth from Morristown, NJ. The Wells women put on some "girlie" music for warm-up and proceeded to win every race!

This is the 3rd year that Kelsey and Tiffany have been on the team together. Every year they go back and forth with who has the fastest times. They are always pushing each other in practice and at meets with a friendly rivalry. This year Tiffany has come out on top in the 100 FR event until Saturday. Tiffany was in Lane 3 but Kelsey was all about OUTSIDE HEAT in lane 1. She won the event beating out Tiffany and a swimmer from CSE by only .28. On top of all of that she also earned a personal best time by 2 seconds! Good Job Kels!

Next Meet:
11/19/2009 - SUNY Cobleskill
12/5/2009 - King's College

Utica

The men's and women's team showed a good fight yesterday at Utica College. At 5:30pm Utica divers hit the board and earned 18 points for the women and 32 points for the men's team. This made it very difficult for us to win this meet. The men's team closed the gap with a loss by 7 points!

Meet Highlights...

Idolyn (SO) and Jackie (JR) won 2 individual races. The men's team was able to win both relays plus 6 other first place wins!

The closest win was in the 100 Fly with sophomore Drew (SO). He won his event by only .02 seconds!!

Gwenn (FR) took off 2 seconds in her 100 FR bringing her down to a 1:07.55. She also took off 7 seconds in her 200 FR (2:26.89)

Anthony (SO) was only able to swim one semester last year because got a bad case of mono. Now that he is back in the water he is swimming very well. This past meet he took off 5 seconds in his 200 FR bringing his time down to a 2:21.31.

Next Event:

Birthday Wishes

Happy Birthday to both Tiffany and Court. The swim team has a tradition where if your birthday is during season you have to swim through a tunnel of splashing kickboards and then you have to squeeze yourself into a stretched out cap

3 RECORDS BROKEN

The team didn't have any easy week of practice before they entered the pool on Saturday. Today was a long event line-up that included both 100s and 200s of strokes. Even though many of the swimmers were tired they were able to push past that feeling to get great times and show SUNY Brockport what we have become!

Last meet Jeff (JR) broke the 100 BR record and now this week he broke the 200 BR record.

Anthony (SO) broke his own record by 3 seconds in the 200 Fly and also bettered his time in the 200 IM by 6 seconds.

Mike (JR) broke his own record by 8 seconds in the 200 BA

Jackie (JR) went from 8th to 5th place on the All Wells Top Ten Times shaving off 5 seconds PLUS she WON her event with a 6 second LEAD!

Next Weeks Events:
11/11/09 - Away meet with Utica College
11/12/09 - Hour of Power Relay - Supporting & Raising awareness for Sarcoma Cancer
11/14/09 - Home meet against College of St. Elizabeth (women only)

1st Home Meet

This past Saturday we had our first home meet against SUNY IT! The pressure was on for us to show this team and the rest of the NEAC conference what we are all about.

The women's team demolished SUNY IT's women's team by 38 points! Many of the women swam personal best times and earned 1st place. Below are some highlights....

Tiffany (SR) and Kelsey (SR) place 1st and 2nd respectively in the 100 free with Tiffany within .5 of her PB and Kelsey getting a PB by 1 second. Kelsey, a distance swimmer, swam the 100 breaststroke to earn some extra points for the team and ended up winning the race!

Idolyn (SO) was nominated and selected for NEAC Athlete of the Week for her performance. She earned first place in all 3 of her events: 50 FR, 100 FLY and 200 Free Relay. Earning 17 points for the Express.

Broken Record Alert - The men's team started off the meet with a 2 second lead in the 200 Medley Relay swam by Mike (JR), Jeff (JR), Drew (SO) and Dan (FR). \

Jeff (JR) earned 2nd place at the meet and on the All Wells Top Ten Times for his 200 IM swim, broke the record in the 100 BR and earning first place.

Dan (FR) shaved off 3 seconds in the 100 Fly and 2 seconds in his 50 FR to get his closer to his PB.

We also had a special guest, Court (SR) to help the men's team. He is the men's captain but he also plays soccer. After his soccer practice he came to the meet and swam the 100 FR and was the 3rd leg in the 200 FR relay. The very next day he had a soccer game against Penn St. Berks where the Express won 4-0!

I am very PROUD of the accomplishments of the swim team and it's only meet #2! Next meet is against SUNY Brockport on Saturday (7th) starting at 2pm (meet start changed).

Hartwick Relays!

This past Saturday was our first meet of the season!!! The team did very well and we are excited for what the season will hold for us in the upcoming meets.

Highlights
* The Men's team broke the 400 Medley record by 9 seconds.
* Gwenn (FR) got a personal best in the 500 free by 7 seconds
* Kelsey (SR) and Tiffany (SR) both took off 2 seconds in their 50 Free
* Dan (FR) was part of the 400 Medley relay plus he is currently on the top ten list in the 50 free (4th) and 100 Fly (2nd)

This is the first year we are giving out "Swimmer of the Meet" and Biggest Time Drop" after the meet. This meet we had 3 winners.

Jackie (JR) had an unfortunate accident the previous weekend and she had to get 32 stitches in her forearm. With some extra wrapping she still swam at this meet. She even swam the 100 Backstroke for the first time! For her efforts in helping the team she was awarded Swimmer of the meet.

Dan (FR) also earned the Swimmer of the Meet award because in his first collegiate swim meet he earned 3 spots in the Men's All Wells Top Ten List including breaking a record.

It was difficult to decide the biggest time drop because we had a few but Carolyn (assistant coach) and I decided it should go to Tiffany (SR) because she took off 2 seconds in the 50 free!

Congratulations to the Wells College Swim Team for an excellent performance.

Upcoming events:
10/23/09 - Kids' Night Out Fundraiser
10/24/09 - Red vs. White - scrimmage

World's Largest Swimming Pool

It is more than 1,000 yards long, covers 20 acres, has a 115ft deep end and holds 66 million gallons of water.

Guinness Book of Records named the vast pool beside the sea in Chile as the biggest in the world.

This took five years to build, cost nearly 1 billion and the annual maintenance bill will be 2million.

Anyone up for doing a lap or two?

Men's Team Gift

I am back at States in the same Hotel for Men's team. Everything was going smoothly until....

I came back from a coach's meeting and Carolyn (assistant coach) greets me in the lobby and says the "boys" left me a "gift". I must admit I was a bit worried about this "gift". But, first I went to their room for a quick meeting.

On my way to my room, I see this....

I wasn't sure what it was until I got closer....

Can you tell what it is??

It's their HAIR that they shaved off their HEAD!!! How sweet of the Men's team is to give me such a thoughtful gift... :-)

Tomorrow is the first day of States - Go Wells!!!

1st Day at States

Well, we finished the first day of States with success!

We started off the morning with the 200 Free A-Relay earning the 8th spot on the Wells Top Ten times. The A-Relay included Ashley, Alli, Idie and Jackie. Jackie also swam her fastest 50 EVER (26.80). The B-Relay consisted of Tiffany (whom took off 2 seconds!), Beverly, Kayleen and Sam.

The next 2 events all the swimmers had life-time best times. Colleen took off 4 seconds (6:26.54) and Tiffany took off 6 seconds (6:50.49) in the 500 Free. Idie was seated first in her heat and stayed in the lead throughout the race. She finished with a PB of 2:35.39. Also, Caitlin took off 5 seconds (3:38.36).

We had 8 swimmers swim the 50 free and EVERYONE had a Personal Best TIME!!! Jackie swam a 27.11 which earned her the 4th spot on the Wells Top Ten!

Finally, we ended with the 400 Medley Relay where Colleen was the anchor and had a personal best by 1 second 1:08.08.

Next week the woman's team leaves for UNYSCSA (states) which is held at Nottingham HS, Syracuse, NY. The following week it will be the men's team's turn.

I will try my best to keep this blog up-to-date during the meet so make sure you return!

Captain's Practice

The Wells swim team has a tradition of holding a captain's practice sometime during January training but it is always a surprise. In fact, I usually play along and tell the rest of the team what a hard practice today is going to be! Even though we were one captain short, we still had a great time!

Here are some pictures...
The captain split the swim team into two smaller teams. They had to go around campus and find items that represented each swimmer's personality. As you can see the team on the right is holding a mop - one of our swimmers is very into cleaning - EVERYTHING!

Dodgeball - But where's the other team?

ON GUARD!!!

At the very end, our Captain handed out Paper Plate awards that he designed himself. Even the coach's got one.

Mine said, " Would Swim it for you if she could (and would be better than you)" Award

January Training Begins!

The swimmers are back on campus training twice a day in the pool plus an hour of dryland training 2-3 times a week.

So far, we have had 3 practices (plus dryland) and everyone is getting back in the grove of things. There are still a few swimmers that were not able to make it back to campus yesterday but we will have our whole team by next Monday.

We did loose our female captain, Kelsey because we will be study abroad in Spain for the semester. Her leadership and commitment to the team will be missed.
